Car Lemon Law header image 2

Resolved Question: How can I fix the clicking sound in my shifter caused by me hitting the brake?

I drive a 1997 Nissan 200SX with 107k miles. I just bought it a few days ago (no warranty or lemon law so bringing it back isn’t an option). Yesterday I noticed a loud clicking sound started occurring when ever I apply pressure or let go of the brake. I followed the sound to a mechanism in the shifter box which I’m assuming is what prevents you from shifting without the brake applied. Also, the sound only occurs when the car is on. My main priority is getting rid of the annoying and loud sound, but as a bonus I’m wondering if I should possibly be worrying about another issue that may be occurring. I noticed when my car is off I can still switch out of park to anything else without even touching the break, and worse than that I can switch it from drive to reverse without hitting the brake while driving.

Any quick simple fix for the sounds, or maybe even the whole issue? Will this be a bigger issue? Thanks ahead of time.
