Car Lemon Law header image 2

Open Question: Can I get a refund for a used car?

I have had nothing but problems with a used car I purchased recently. The very next day after I drove it the check engine light came on. I brought it back to the dealership and they quickly checked and fixed the issue. However, the engine light came on again. Not only did the light return but the transmission light came on. When I drove it I could feel the car not picking up and just become sluggish. Once again I took it back to them and left the car there for them to thoroughly inspect. The problem was fixed but after the second day – the car chokes and the transmission light comes on again!

Am I able to get a refund for it? Or am I basically at the mercy of dealership and how they want to handle this issue? I do not think the car is covered by NJ state lemon laws as the model is 2001 and too old to be covered.

Thoughts? Opinions?

They might be open to exchanging the car for another one but how would the financing work?
It is not sold ‘as is’. There’s a 30 warranty from the dealer and a 2 year warranty they included… but the problem I fear will be too much and I do not think the car is safe so I do not want to keep it.
